Russell Road is a tranquil residential road 6km west of the city centre, nestled between bustling Kensington High Street, Holland Park, Notting Hill, Shepherd's Bush and Brook Green. This beautiful Victorian townhouse was built in 1868 on the Holland Estate, at the same time as the Royal Albert Hall. Olympia was built eighteen years later on the opposite bank of Counter's Creek, where the railway runs today. These were the boom years following the 1851 Great Exhibition on Hyde Park and leading up to the 1908 Olympic Games in Shepherd's Bush. Leighton was 38 and had just moved into his new studio in Holland Park Road. Elgar was 11, growing up near Worcester, but at 33 he would be striking out to make a living just across Counter's Creek in West Kensington.
